Powering What’s Next: Q&A with Renewables Operations Director Brad Masek

For Brad Masek, a career in energy started early and evolved alongside the industry itself. From his family’s electrical and HVAC business to roles across nuclear, coal, solar, and battery storage, Brad has built a career grounded in hands-on experience, continuous learning, and a focus on people.

Q: Tell us about your career journey.

I’ve had the opportunity to work across several technologies, which really shaped my path. I started at a nuclear plant in South Texas, then joined Vistra as an engineer at the Sandow Power Plant, a coal facility. After supporting the fleet in Generation Services, I returned to Sandow to lead the maintenance team for seven years and then help manage its closure, an experience that was pivotal.

From there, I led the operational readiness team for the Moss Landing Battery Energy Storage Facility. Today, as Renewables Operations Director, I oversee readiness and operations across our growing fleet. It’s an exciting time as our team continues to expand alongside Vistra’s investments in solar and storage.

Q: What’s the most exciting part of your role?

The people. I enjoy meeting new team members, learning from their expertise, and working through the unique challenges of renewables. No two weeks are the same, and that keeps things interesting.

Q: What sets Vistra apart?

It’s the culture. Vistra is focused on results, but it’s also a place where people matter. I feel appreciated for who I am, not just for what I do.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

Listen more. Everyone has something to teach you if you take the time to hear it. Learning never really stops.

Q: What’s something you can’t live without?

My faith. It shapes how I lead, how I make decisions, and what matters most to me.
