A major milestone for Vistra’s nuclear fleet: the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved the extension of the operating license for Perry Nuclear Power Plant through 2046, allowing the station to continue delivering reliable, zero-carbon electricity for another 20 years. The approval follows a rigorous, multi-year NRC review process that included extensive safety and environmental evaluations, reaffirming Perry’s strong track record of safe and responsible operations. With Perry’s renewal complete, all six of Vistra’s nuclear reactors are now licensed to operate for up to 60 years, an important achievement that strengthens long-term grid reliability while supporting jobs, communities, and always-on power generation across the region.
Did You Know?
- Perry was the 100th nuclear power plant built in the United States, a milestone in the history of American nuclear energy.
- The plant sits along Lake Erie, just 46 miles from the closest point of land in Canada.
- The site was originally designed for two reactor units, and two 516-foot cooling towers were constructed. Today, one reactor unit and one cooling tower are in operation.
- More than 850 acres of forests and marshlands on the property are preserved as part of a certified Urban Wildlife Sanctuary recognized by the National Institute for Urban Wildlife.
