In South Dallas, new trees are taking root, and so is something bigger.
At Ascher Silberstein Elementary School, TXU Energy partnered with the Dallas Mavericks and Texas Trees Foundation to plant trees as part of the South Dallas Greening Initiative. The effort focuses on expanding tree canopy in an area that has long faced extreme heat and limited access to green space.
This work builds on a long-standing commitment. Since 2002, TXU Energy and its parent company, Vistra, have helped plant more than 300,000 trees, supporting healthier, more resilient communities.
“In Texas, we all understand how important shade can be,” said Meranda Cohn, vice president of corporate affairs for TXU Energy. “It’s exciting to see students planting trees that will create cooler spaces today and grow with them over time.”
On school campuses, trees help cool playgrounds and classrooms, improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and manage stormwater. They also support student well-being by creating environments that improve focus, reduce stress, and contribute to stronger academic outcomes.
“Having TXU, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Texas Trees Foundation partner to plant these trees brings our community together,” said Tania Gaytan, principal of Ascher Silberstein Elementary. “This effort truly brightens the way we shine.”
